View Full Version : I want to be a Jonathon!

Here is the devotion I read the other night. The powerful imagery is still with me 2 days later so I felt it needed sharing:

1 Sam. 23:16 And Johnathon Saul's son arose and went to David in to the wood and strengthened his hand in God.

God make us all His Jonathons. There is a great hunter abroad in the world. Like Saul who sought David every day, he seeks souls every day, never a day's respite, always the hunt is on. Although the words stand for ever, “but God delivered him not into his hand”, yet sometimes souls tire of being hunted, and like David they are in a wilderness in a wood. Then is Johnathon's chance. But notice what he does, he does not so comfort David that he becomes necessary to him. “He strengthened his hand in God. He leaves his friend strong in God, resting in God, safe in God. He detaches his dear friend David from himself and he attaches him to his “very present help”. Then Johnathon went to his house and David abode in the wood- with God.

Mel here. That is what I want to do, strengthen women, not to follow me, not to get strength from me, but to point them and help them find shelter in the strength and might of God. To help them remember and believe God promise, to never leave them or forsake them.

Wouldn't the Christian world be beter for having more Jonathons?

Yep! I just heard a study that touched on this. What a blessing Johnathon was. I agree--we ought to be more like Johnathon--pointing people in the direction of GOD, rather than causing others to become dependent on us. :)

Good word, Mel!

Thanks for sharing that, Mel. That's my goal as a friend and parent too, to show others only Jesus. I certainly have nothing to offer anyone.
