View Full Version : And the Dream Changes

For years I have dreamt of redoing a kitchen around the old grist mill dishes my ma had when I was a kid. I have even collected a few to use as my everyday dishes. Blue and white has seemed to be my lot in life for decades. Recently I discovered something though… blue is NOT my favorite color! I am shocked! All my life I declared blue as my number 1. I have however discovered I was having a secret love affair with… RED! Now do not get my wrong, blue is still my number 2, with purple a close number 3.

I have had visions of my kitchen dancing in my head, and it is a red and white feast! LOL My plans include lots of paint, white dishes and red checked dish cloths, table clothes and towels. Red pots and pans and so on. I will keep blue in a minor role in the kitchen, as it now shares the bathroom with purple.

I plan to paint the walls bright white, make fabric doors for the cupboards. (This is my own design, and it works great in my head!) The idea is for the fabric to come out of the wood frames easily so it can be washed. (I do a lot of splatter cooking) The floor will be stripped down to the under layer, and given a new set of ply wood, which will then be painted white, taped when dry and checked in red. I figure if I use cement floor paint this should hold up, and at the same time give me the vintage 50’s floor feel.

I heard walmart has a set of red appliances, ours doesn’t but I am still hoping! Our toaster died last week, a cat broke my coffee maker last month, and the can opener died at least 3 weeks ago, so if I can replace them all in red, I will be dancin’!

My next project will be painting my big appliances. Stove, Fridge, washer and dryer with appliance paint. I will have to study on this one. I want to do this now, and then as we evolve the house (as cash permits) and do the structural changes, I will save for new, red appliances. I also want a red sink. I know I can do that as well, we just have to leave the house for a week so the enamel coating can dry (I will do my tub in dark blue at the same time) this means we HAVE to take a week long trip at some point! For some reason redoing the kitchen in red is really inspiring me and I am very fired up and want to begin NOW!

I do plan to get the wall paint next week, I am going to do them in bright white, and then the shelves of the cabinets will get a coat of red, so the white dishes show off on them. I plan to get rid of all the cabinet doors too, and find the perfect material for them.

The tippy top cupboards will become display areas for collected dishes. Serving bowls and pitchers and such if I get any. I still need shelves suitable for displaying my salt and pepper share collection (I inherited many from my mom form the 40s and 50s).
So now I will officially begin collecting red and white, linens, serving things (I plan to have white plates but serving dishes in any style that suits my mood) I want to have FUN in my kitchen and while I still love blue, red is much more fun!

Sounds like you're really feeling better, Mel! Red is so cheerful! (My favorite color)

BTW, the appliance paint works great! I had an old refrigerator that I painted dark brown (from the avocado it used to be). The paint looked nice as long as I had the fridge - about 4 years. Just follow the directions on the label.

Love it........ I have been debating about spending my "Stash Cash" on some beautiful Red and White Vintage Rooster Dinnerware.

Hope all your Dreams come true .

if you can't find your red appliances at Walmart check your local Lowes. Kitchenaid makes a whole line of red small appliances, and you can special order the larger peices in Red as you can afford it. You could also get your red sink and blue tub from the plumbing department on special order. It really is cheaper than you think to order the peices in the color you want. It will hold up better than paint also.

It sure is nice to hear you sounding so fired up over decorating. It must mean you are starting to feel better.

Hey, your quilt will even match! LOL

That's exactly what I was thinking R! "Whew... quilt's got plenty of red it in, we were on the right track." ;)

Don't know if you saw the messages (it was on the old forum), but we were trying to figure out what your preferred colors were. Elisa finally found a post of yours mentioning some of the kitchen colors and we concluded that you like red the most and hate green (thanks V!) :)

For years I didn't like red, then I had my youngest son and since he was really quite small his favourite colour has been red, and I have come to fully appreciate it...funnily enough the colour I look best in is deep red so I now consider myself a lucky woman!

I love red and white checked fabrics, so fresh and cheerful looking, I think your kitchen will look wonderful :)

First, it does my heart good to hear you so filled with enthusiasm. Good luck on your decorating.

Red is the main accent color in my kitchen, but mostly I have white - appliances and cabinets. I got my red Kitchenaid can opener at Walmart. Red is a color that you can use at almost any season of the year, and I haven't gotten tired of mine in 10 years here and 5 at the last house. I even have a red front door (in my white house with black shutters.)

Mel,
Actually it is Target that carries the line of appliances in red.
They recently had the microwave on sale for 47.88$ and it is really cute.
Funny, red used to be my favorite but now I am falling in love with light green sort of like a frosted pale green.I now am the proud owner of 2 bathroom sets in this color from rugs to towels and they were both from someone who was changing colors so they were free!!!!
Can't wait to see pics of your kitchen.Isn't planning fun?
Love and God bless,
Helen(grammea)

The quilt is going to help inspire my bedroom, it is sooooo gorgeous! and yes lots of red was an awesome choice!:cheeky-smiley-025:
I do cuddle up with it now and then and think of all my friends who cared enough to give me such a gift of love. It is honestly the best gift I have ever gotten.
As for the sink and tub, when we have saved up the cash to do the structural changes we will buy new, for now my goal is to paint and make due until then.
The bathroom is like Jess's and needs a total redo.
In the kitchen when it comes to structural, we are going to move the fridge and stove to flank the sink, and the other side will be floor to ceiling pantry, with a front load washer/dryer set in the middle with counter space as well.
Hmm how to describe... first off the pantry will be wall units cuz the wall I will put it on is a hollow one, for the pocket door. I plan floor to mid section shelves, with a counter work space, then more shelves a top that. In the middle of the wall will be the washer dryer set, and them more shelves and counter work space.... I can see it but I cant speak it!
I am so excited to begin the interim redo, I just giggle over and over thnking about it!

Love the way it sounds, and I think when you take that week off to let paint dry ------------ the perfect, really PREFECT, spot to go is the BEACH, specifcally the ones on the Gulf Coast,Costal Bend of Texas. I know of a sorta tacky place there that would love to have you. {if that isn't enough hint for you to come here I will come up with more.}Blessings, Gerrie

They are pretty inexpensive, only 19.96 for the whole set. Here is the link to them on the Walmart site:
