To me it means I have freedom. Your rights end at the edge of my nose, or my property line. My rights end at yours. We have no right to force feed our ideas on anyone else and vice versa.
This applies in all areas of our lives. We do have laws to obey, but I am talking about law abiding people for now, maybe some other day I will tackle criminal activity. (Maybe not…)
What irritates me is folks who decide what goes on in MY home is THEIR business. Now I am not talking about abusive stuff here, just everyday decisions that may or may not go along with public opinion.
For the record I am a Prairie gal. I wear only dresses; I cover to study, pray or teach. I study my Bible and pray before doling out advice on things it covers (which is everything in one way or another). I am very conservative on most issues but have my more liberal ideas on others. I do not trust “experts” just because they write a book, have a show or a political office. In general I think “experts” take themselves way too seriously. So, when some one tells me it is a bad idea to home school, or teach my values to MY kids, I stand back and wonder why.
First off it is not the government’s business to intervene in my home. They have no right to tell me I can not teach my value system to my kids. Yet I have in my travels encountered individuals who say they should have that right.
It seems to me that sheep follow the leader with out question. I have no issue with that, as long as God is the leader.
However just because folks in public office do not under stand my point of view does NOT mean I am A) wrong B) stupid C) un or misinformed.
It could very well be that I have done my home work and disagree with the PTB (Powers that be) on an issue.
Two examples I see often here on Prairie Homemaker are, home schooling and vaccinations. There are cohesive and logical reasons on both sides of the fence, and yet folks on both sides treat each other as stupid.
Same deal with being a SAHM or a Working Mom (is there a short hand for that?).
People need to put their noses back in joint and concentrate on their own families.
If Mrs. Dilbey wishes to cover, raise her sons to want submissive wives, and her daughters to be submissive wives, and home schools them, that is FINE. If the Dilbey family practices courtship, that is also fine, not much chance for unwanted or unexpected pregnancy that way, no need for abortion clinics then either. It is not the business of Mrs. Jockey how Mr. and Mrs. D run their family. It is not the government’s business either. Now if it is seen that the children are beaten daily, exorcised on weekends or otherwise neglected or harmed, then by all means step in.
However just because they dislike public schools (I do, there are some good ones out there but over all, I dislike them.) or insist on having a prominent role in their children’s dating life, is not enough for the government to pass laws telling us even more stuff we can not do with our families.
Now, here is a paradox, I am a proponent of home school, but my boys graduated from public school. I am a proponent of folks not having to vaccinate, but my boys were vaccinated. Why? I am a proponent of rights, freedom to raise my family as I see fit. I made those choices.
The next step for some will be saying that monetarily poor families should have their children taken away and given to well off families for the “benefits” that can be provided. (Yes a politician that once ran for PRESIDENT proposed that exact thing).
Folks we live in America, we have choices, freedom to serve God in all aspects of our lives, including medical treatment and schooling. Personally I like my Doctors, but Prayer is more effective, a doctor can give me pills and help control, God can and does heal, sometimes He uses doctors, sometimes not.
Having been a teacher, and watching schools deteriorate due to lack of parental involvement, and increased interference so that parents feel they need not be as involved (not all but folks I have seen it) I feel for many kids, home schooling is the best option for a brighter future.
As for the dating, the way we do it now, marriages fail 50% of the time. Hundreds of children are born out of marriage, and grow up with only 1 parent, never knowing the other. Maybe there is something to this courtship stuff, at least until a girl or boy is 21 and thinking more like an adult.
Do I have all the answers? Nope. However, neither do the nosy parkers or the PTB.
For the record this is a general post that has been on my mind awhile, forming in the background and some stuff I read recently set it off full swing.
